Ali paused at the ward reception desk on her path to James’ room and took a bracing few breaths. She couldn’t believe the nerves she was feeling over facing him. It wasn’t right. They’d known each other for too long for shit like that. It was serving to triple any nausea she would feel on average with the pregnancy. She had nearly run into Mark in the foyer, which could’ve been an absolute disaster scenario, but she’d quickly hidden behind a ficus plant until he had passed with one of his friends and left the hospital. At least that was one potential hurdle out of the way.

She expected Izzy to be there, but she hadn’t seen her so far. She didn’t know what she was going to say if she did run in to her, but she would just have to cross that bridge if she came to it. Right now, though, speaking to James and explaining everything had to be her first port of call.

( She confirmed James’ room number with the ward clerk, but only after lying and telling her she was James’s sister-in-law... )
