James snapped his cell phone shut and set it aside to light up a much-needed cigarette. He was starting to wonder if he should keep a Fuck Up Tally, though if he did, he’d be running out of wall space to notch up the points by now.

He’d just cancelled Isabel’s surprise thirtieth birthday party. A string of text messages, emails from his laptop and telephone calls had it all over within half an hour. The only two phone calls he had ceased prematurely had been to Mark and then Ali before either of them could question him further. ‘We had a huge argument. A party is a bad idea’. Then he hung up. They’d try to call back, of course. Thank god for caller ID.

( He put his feet up on the railing of his balcony and looked out over the rooftops of the buildings sprawling before him. There was a light drizzle, a good match for his mood, though a downpour would be more appropriate... )
