James first day back on the job in the FBI. It was... surreal. More than. First, he was aware he was still undercover but it didn't bear the weight it had over the last few months. This sort of thing was a piece of piss for him. The work had never been the problem; it had been trying to convince himself he was okay without his family. It had been impossible.
But now he was back and it was like putting on an old pair of slippers... only someone else's slippers. Everyone had been stunned when he walked into the conference room after Pierce telling the department he had a 'surprise' for them. One chick even ran out to throw up, and James just figured it was a bit drama queen-esque considering he hardly knew her. The guise he was back, but amnesiac was easy to pull off. It was about acting, but sooner or later the dust would settle and no one would even think about it. Everyone still called him 'Campbell', even though he kept correcting them that it wasn't his name. It was going to take some time to sink in. Some tried to nudge some information out of him, but he had the blank look down by now.
Only thing was, he needed some time to adjust himself and by the time the afternoon came, he was escaping up to the roof for a smoke. This was like coming home. The familiar rooftops, the familiar breeze on his face all this way up above the city. He took a long drag on the cigarette and closed his eyes, tilting his face up to the sky as he blew the smoke out. It was going to be okay.

on Tuesday, 30 June 2009 09:55 am (UTC)It was just getting harder to keep the lies up, even though she needed to lie for James' sake. She came up beside him, and rest her chin on his shoulder, on of the benefits of being close to his height. "So, what's it like to be back, Fraser?"
It was also a conscious effort for Izzy to call him that, taking a lot of her energy. Truth was she missed calling him Campbell, and sometimes she just didn't call him anything. Ever since she'd found out he was alive she'd been confused about what to call him.

on Tuesday, 30 June 2009 10:21 am (UTC)Izzy pulled a face as she stepped away to look over the cityscape sprawling out before them. "It's easier to type than say. Old habits, and all that."

on Tuesday, 30 June 2009 10:35 am (UTC)She frowned a little as she took a drag, the smoke curling out of her mouth as she exhaled. "Who?"

on Tuesday, 30 June 2009 10:46 am (UTC)Izzy's eyes widened as she looked at the photograph, a huge smile curving her lips. She was over any feelings of jealously that had been there before. Now she was just happy for James and Harri. "Oh my god! Is it a boy? He sort of looks like what Fi's son looked like as a blob. Only his dick was attached to his forehead, no joke. He was all curled into this tight ball. So you're calling him Campbell?"

on Tuesday, 30 June 2009 10:54 am (UTC)"Now that's just wrong," he snorted, tilting his head as he looked at the photo. "You call him Kermit and I'll belt you. I think my son has the chilled cool uterus reclined thing going on, don't you think? At least he wasn't mooning the screen like Jamie." He nodded, a smile dancing on his lips again. "Yeah, we thought it was fitting."

on Tuesday, 30 June 2009 10:57 am (UTC)"He's a Campbell male, of course he's going to show the world what he has already." Izzy looked at him, her eyebrows raised a little. "Jamie was only Kermit because it sounded better than Sprog. It's good to see you smiling about him, James. I was waiting for the proud father to kick in. How's Harri?"

on Tuesday, 30 June 2009 11:06 am (UTC)"We can thank Sunshine for that. Amazing what some baby drool will do to a bloke. I don't know what it was. Some penny just dropped in my head. Things are looking up. I'm still as scared as all fuck, but it feels like it's getting easier. I mean, if Ali can do it, I can, right?" He nodded, wetting his lips. "Yeah, she's doing good."

on Tuesday, 30 June 2009 11:18 am (UTC)"You really like being an uncle, don't you? Imagine what it'll be like to be covered in drool you helped create. I'm glad this worked out. I'm glad you got your family back, and you get a chance to be a part of your own family." She came back over to him, and slid her arms around him in a hug. "You can do it, Fraser. I have faith in you. I don't think Harri would let you fuck it up and leave her holding a baby anyway."

on Tuesday, 30 June 2009 11:25 am (UTC)He nodded, smiling. "I do. And I like seeing Ali happy. I thought I fucked things up for her. Seems she's getting fucked up in her own whole interesting way and does not need my help with it at all," he laughed. "Yeah, I dunno, I was pretty fucked up. It was touch and go. I'll be honest, I wanted to run and hide again. It took a lot of deep soul searching to stick around. Nothing to do with anyone, it was just that mental block kicking in again."

on Tuesday, 30 June 2009 11:36 am (UTC)"I thought I had, too. I really regret what happened after you... you know. I wish I had thought more about Ali and the baby." Izzy reached up to ruffle his hair. "You and that mental block... Sometimes I still want to punch some sense into you."

on Tuesday, 30 June 2009 11:41 am (UTC)He nodded. "It's okay. She's got her paramedic. He knows how to take care of her... maybe even better than we do. That's huge." He flipped her off. "I have issues. I'm special," he joked, even if it was only half joking in essence. "We just all need to get back on the same page."

on Tuesday, 30 June 2009 11:47 am (UTC)"I know, right? I couldn't believe it when she told me they were engaged. Still, I can't imagine anyone better for Ali. Andrew really knows how to make her feel good." Iz tilted her head. "And what is the same page?"

on Tuesday, 30 June 2009 11:54 am (UTC)He pressed his lips together and started to laugh. "Oh fuck, he sure does that! He fucked her into the picnic table and it collapsed. She broke her arm! She's quite proud of the fact. That is the genes my beautiful innocent niece has," he said with a shake of his head. "I'm not sure. Hopefully somewhere we can laugh and put the shit behind us."

on Wednesday, 1 July 2009 03:42 am (UTC)Izzy's green eyes went wide as she stared at him. "Andrew did what?! How come Ali hasn't called me up bragging about it? Your old picnic table? Wow... guess they really knew how to make use of it." Iz couldn't help but think about that kiss she and James had shared, maybe they would have broken the picnic table if Mark hadn't interrupted. She shrugged off the memory, and tucked her hair behind her ear. "I'm sure we will."

on Friday, 3 July 2009 09:13 am (UTC)He tilted his head. "Maybe she thinks you're busy? Or not in the city? She was all smug and braggy when I took Sunshine home. Andrew wanted to take Ali out on a date, only I have no idea how that turned into The Great Picnic Table Crash of 2009. She got a cast and all. I was jealous," he laughed.
