James first day back on the job in the FBI. It was... surreal. More than. First, he was aware he was still undercover but it didn't bear the weight it had over the last few months. This sort of thing was a piece of piss for him. The work had never been the problem; it had been trying to convince himself he was okay without his family. It had been impossible.
But now he was back and it was like putting on an old pair of slippers... only someone else's slippers. Everyone had been stunned when he walked into the conference room after Pierce telling the department he had a 'surprise' for them. One chick even ran out to throw up, and James just figured it was a bit drama queen-esque considering he hardly knew her. The guise he was back, but amnesiac was easy to pull off. It was about acting, but sooner or later the dust would settle and no one would even think about it. Everyone still called him 'Campbell', even though he kept correcting them that it wasn't his name. It was going to take some time to sink in. Some tried to nudge some information out of him, but he had the blank look down by now.
Only thing was, he needed some time to adjust himself and by the time the afternoon came, he was escaping up to the roof for a smoke. This was like coming home. The familiar rooftops, the familiar breeze on his face all this way up above the city. He took a long drag on the cigarette and closed his eyes, tilting his face up to the sky as he blew the smoke out. It was going to be okay.

She's quite proud of the fact. That is the genes my beautiful innocent niece has," he said with a shake of his head. "I'm not sure. Hopefully somewhere we can laugh and put the shit behind us."

on Wednesday, 1 July 2009 03:42 am (UTC)Izzy's green eyes went wide as she stared at him. "Andrew did what?! How come Ali hasn't called me up bragging about it? Your old picnic table? Wow... guess they really knew how to make use of it." Iz couldn't help but think about that kiss she and James had shared, maybe they would have broken the picnic table if Mark hadn't interrupted. She shrugged off the memory, and tucked her hair behind her ear. "I'm sure we will."

on Friday, 3 July 2009 09:13 am (UTC)He tilted his head. "Maybe she thinks you're busy? Or not in the city? She was all smug and braggy when I took Sunshine home. Andrew wanted to take Ali out on a date, only I have no idea how that turned into The Great Picnic Table Crash of 2009. She got a cast and all. I was jealous," he laughed.
